OKSZ’s food retailer member companies are at the forefront of food donation
The reduction of food waste is treated as a priority task by international or mixed-owned food retailers operating in Hungary. Waste loss is reduced to a minimum with automated product management systems, and food that is left in the stores and suitable for consumption goes to customers at a discounted price or as a donation to the needy.
International supermarket chains set an example by monitoring the amount of waste and by adopting good practices that shape attitudes in order to ensure that as little food as possible ends up in the bins. At the forefront of social responsibility Although only nearly 5% of food waste can be linked to retail, minimizing the loss is an important goal from a business, environmental and social point of view for the six international food retailers of the National Trade Association (OKSZ) (Aldi, Auchan, Lidl, Penny , SPAR and Tesco). Although they work with a stock of thousands of products, their efficient product management systems enable the forecast and optimal determination of the product quantities required for daily sales. Similar automated monitoring systems support the sale of food that is approaching its best-before date and at a reduced price, which also benefits the customers.Based on the sustainable operation, less food going to landfill means less resources used for wasted production, in addition, a smaller amount of capacity is required to process waste, and ultimately, the decreasing amount of food thrown away reduces the environmental footprint.
