Organic farming is the key to agricultural sustainability
The Ministry of Agriculture supports the advancement of organic farming in Hungary in every possible way, because in the KAP Strategic Plan, it undertook that by 2027 the proportion of organically cultivated areas in Hungary will reach 10 percent, which means 504 thousand hectares – said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy on Tuesday, the European At the opening of the 2024 Eco-Management Congress in Budapest.

In his greeting, the head of the ministry emphasized that Hungary is happy to host the 2024 European Congress on Organic Farming, which will further strengthen our country’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. István Nagy said that the role of organic farming is outstanding in the preservation of natural resources, in providing the population with healthy and nutritious food, and in increasing the population retention power of the countryside. He added that it goes without saying that organic farming is the leading model of agricultural sustainability at the EU level, he explained. The Minister of Agriculture added that the market for organic products in the European Union is growing steadily and has already reached the level of 45 billion euros.
Hungary also shows outstanding progress in this area: in 2023, controlled organic farming was carried out on more than 320,000 hectares
About 420,000 organic producers now cultivate almost 10 percent of European agricultural land with organic farming, the minister explained. István Nagy added that the goal of establishing the rules of the Common Agricultural Policy after 2027 is to create a competitive, crisis-resistant and farmer-friendly European agriculture. In addition to all of this, promoting the sustainability of the agricultural sector is a top priority, as is the creation of a knowledge-based and innovative agricultural economy, the head of the ministry emphasized.
