For the sake of being polite – Absurd of the day
Effingham County school officials will be eying Hooters today to determine if the restaurant is a proper environment for students in a work-study program.
An Effingham County High School senior has been working as a hostess at the restaurant for about a month, leaving school early to earn class credit.
Superintendent Michael Moore calls the employment at Hooters, whose logo centers on women's breasts, inappropriate for the work-study program.
“I have questions in my mind because of the advertising and sexual connotations,'' Moore said. “People can make choices about where they want to work but when the school system gets involved … it is my decision that we should not be involved.''
Guyton resident Larry Williams, whose 17-year-old daughter is at the center of the controversy, says the superintendent is overreacting.
Busing tables are one of the duties that Effingham County High School senior Laura Williams, left, fulfills as a hostess at Hooters at Ga. 204 and I-95. Williams took the position as a work-study job, and the Effingham County School board is taking up the matter to decide if Hooters is an appropriate place for a work-study.
