Sleep is essential for our physical and mental health. However, IKEA’s latest research reveals that many Hungarians struggle with sleep deprivation, with 45 percent sleeping an average of 6 hours or less. But what does their bedroom reveal about Hungarians?

IKEA has unveiled its largest global survey to date[1] into people’s nighttime habits to reveal the obstacles to quality sleep. The research provides insights and offers a variety of solutions to ensure that sleep is restful and enjoyable for everyone. Hungary also participated in the survey, which covered 57 countries.

Where and how we sleep is important to us

While everyone’s ideal sleeping environment is different, comfort and adequate space play a key role: 66 percent of respondents sleep on a double bed, which strikes a balance between comfort and shared space. 19 percent sleep in a single bed, while 11 percent sleep on a sofa, the latter figure presumably reflecting parents sleeping in the living room. According to the research, 62 percent of Hungarians sleep better in a clean and tidy environment.

Sleep means a little differently to everyone

The most popular sleeping position among Hungarians is lying on their side with their legs bent, which is preferred by 42 percent of respondents. Nearly a third (31%) sleep on their side in the same way, but with their legs extended. Only 11 percent choose to sleep on their back, while 16 percent find sleeping on their stomach the most comfortable.

47 percent of Hungarians rarely or never sleep alone, and 50 percent share their bed with their partner. 15 percent of respondents sleep with their child and 4 percent with their pet.

Couples also have different sleeping habits: nearly half (49%) do not follow any rules, their sleeping positions changing depending on their mood and the dynamics of their relationship. 26 percent sleep with their backs to each other to ensure undisturbed rest. 15 percent find the greatest sense of security in a hug, while every tenth couple sleeps facing each other, snuggled together.
