The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has raised its global cereal production forecast by 10.1 million tonnes to 2.971 billion tonnes compared to its September forecast, the Rome-based organization said on its website.

The revision was made because the crop prospects for wheat, maize and rice are more favorable than previously estimated. According to the FAO, if its expectations are confirmed, global cereal production will be 3.8 percent higher than last year, which is the largest annual increase since 2013.

Wheat production is now expected by experts from the international organization to be 809.7 million tonnes

This is 0.6 percent higher than the September forecast and 1.3 percent higher than last year. The upward revision is mainly due to Australia, where weather conditions improved in parts of the country in July and August after the start of the dry season, improving crop prospects, the report said.

FAO expects higher maize harvests in Brazil and the United States

The latter is expected to produce a record 427.1 million tonnes, almost a third of the global crop. The FAO expects global production to reach 1.605 billion tonnes, 0.3 percent higher than expected in September and 91.7 million tonnes higher than last year. Rice production is now expected to reach 556.4 million tonnes, 1 million tonnes higher than the September estimate and 1.2 percent higher than in 2024. The FAO has revised down Pakistan’s rice harvest outlook from its September forecast due to severe flooding in Punjab, the country’s leading rice-producing province. However, this reduction was offset by India’s potential harvest of up to 1.6 million tonnes more than it had forecast in September.
