The professional group “Voice of European Livestock” presented in its recent analysis: in 2024, the populations of the main animal species decreased significantly. The number of pigs decreased to around 132 million (-0.5%), cattle to almost 72 million (-2.8%), sheep to 57 million (-1.7%), and goats to 10 million (-1.6%). Longer-term data also show a similar trend: between 2014 and 2024, the pig population decreased by 8.1%, cattle by 8.7%, sheep by 9.4%, and goats by 16.3%.

There are several factors behind this phenomenon: environmental and regulatory pressures, changing consumer habits, rising production costs and agricultural crises are all forcing livestock farmers to retreat. This is also linked to the fact that the number of farms in the EU fell by 37% between 2005 and 2020, especially small, family-run businesses.

The disappearance of farms does not necessarily mean greater sustainability

The decline in livestock farming can lead to increased dependence on imports, while imported products are often produced with lower environmental and animal welfare standards. This can also mean longer supply chains and greater environmental impact. The process is also risky from the point of view of food security, as Europe becomes increasingly vulnerable to external markets and geopolitical crises. The elimination of extensive livestock farming also threatens the preservation of biodiversity, the maintenance of rural landscapes and the cultivation of local traditions. The data therefore warn that the solution for Europe is not the dismantling of livestock farming, but its responsible, sustainable revival.
