The European Commission extends the authorization of glyphosate for ten years
The European Commission extends the authorization for the use of glyphosate-containing plant protection products within the European Union for ten years under certain new conditions and restrictions based on the comprehensive safety evaluations carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and EU member states – the Brussels board announced on Thursday.
According to the announcement of the EU Commission, the member states did not reach the qualified majority required to renew or reject the approval of the use of glyphosate. In accordance with EU legislation and in the absence of the necessary majority, the Brussels board approves the use license of glyphosate-containing plant protection products within the European Union under certain new conditions and restrictions in the form of a decision.
The restrictions include the prohibition of use as a pre-harvest drying agent, as well as the need for certain measures to protect non-target organisms, they wrote.
Member States are responsible for the national authorization of plant protection products containing glyphosate. Member States can still restrict the use of the substance at the national and regional level, if this is deemed necessary based on the results of the risk assessment, especially with regard to the protection of biological diversity, the European Commission added in its statement.
