The European Commission presented an online consumer protection strategy
The European Commission wants to significantly expand online consumer protection in the EU, including proposing stricter rules against online manipulation and calling for better enforcement of product safety regulations, the Brussels body said on Wednesday.
A central element of the consumer protection strategy presented on Wednesday is legislation on “digital fairness“, which the commission plans to present in 2026. The aim is to better protect consumers from misleading user interfaces that trick users into making unintended purchases or contracts.
It would also crack down on addictive online design elements and unfairly personalised advertising. It also pays particular attention to protecting children online to reduce their exposure to harmful practices and features.
The Commission has announced an EU-wide study into the general impact of social media on young people. It also wants to set up an expert panel on “children and social media“.
The panel would also tighten market surveillance and ensure effective enforcement of the General Product Safety Regulation, as well as further strengthen cooperation with third countries to filter out dangerous products.
