Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi outlined measures aimed at increasing the efficiency of EU border checks and inspections in third countries. The Commission said the steps would ensure that EU citizens continue to enjoy the highest level of food safety, while European producers can compete on a level playing field with their global competitors. The number of inspections in non-EU countries will be significantly increased by 50% in the coming years, and checks at EU border posts will be increased to ensure that Member States are carrying out their checks properly. In addition, stricter and more frequent checks are expected for products and countries of origin where irregularities have been found in the past.

A dedicated EU task force is also being set up to improve the efficiency of import controls, in particular on pesticide residue testing, food and feed safety and compliance with animal welfare requirements. The plans also include training for around 500 Member State authorities and updating the rules on hazardous pesticides banned in the EU in imported products, in line with the latest amendments to international standards.
