The EU has proposed stockpiling essential goods and medical equipment in case of crises
The European Commission has presented proposals for the stockpiling of essential goods, medical and healthcare supplies, with the aim of ensuring access to goods and medical equipment at all times, in particular in times of crisis such as energy shortages, natural disasters, conflicts or pandemics.
The strategy for stockpiling essential goods, presented in Strasbourg, calls on member states to stockpile food, water, diesel, fuel and medicines, among other things, in the event of a crisis.
Member states should also stockpile medical equipment, shelters, generators and other medical supplies, and develop a strategy for their transport and logistics to enable a rapid response.
The EU Commission has encouraged member states to share information to identify stock shortages and overlaps and to strengthen cooperation with EU institutions.
The statement said the EU Commission is also working to accelerate the development, production and availability of medical equipment, in addition to stockpiling. The Brussels body considered it necessary, among other things, to develop next-generation influenza vaccines, new antibiotics and drugs against viral diseases, and to improve the effectiveness of the fight against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats.
Together, these strategies represent a key step towards a more proactive European response to future crises, they added.
