The EU is investing €140 million to introduce generative artificial intelligence in the agri-food industry
The European Commission has launched four new calls for proposals under the Digital Europe programme, worth a total of €140 million, to support the uptake of artificial intelligence (AI), develop digital skills, expand the network of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) and fight fake news and disinformation, the Brussels-based body announced on Tuesday.
Of the €140 million, €55 million will be spent on the deployment of generative AI in the public sector and the agri-food sector, as well as on ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting the strategic initiative on processors and semiconductors and data spaces.
To strengthen advanced digital skills, a further €27 million will be allocated to the creation of four new digital skills academies across the EU, focusing on quantum technologies, artificial intelligence and virtual worlds.
The calls for proposals worth €11 million aim to expand the EDIH network in associated countries and strengthen the focus on artificial intelligence.
The European Commission is also allocating €47 million to support the deployment and effective use of new digital technologies and the network of national internet centres to promote the safety of children and young people online. Of this, €5 million will be allocated to the establishment of a European fact-checking network. Key elements of the network include a fact-checkers’ protection programme against harassment, a fact-checking repository and a rapid response capacity, including in emergency situations.
All four calls for proposals will close on 2 September 2025.
