The volume of fertilizer sold did not change in 2025
Fertilizer distributors sold 1.39 million tons of fertilizer directly to farmers in 2025, which was the same as the volume a year earlier. Fertilizer prices were, according to the calculations of the Central Statistical Office, 11.6 percent higher on average, therefore, net sales revenue from fertilizer sales increased by 13.7 percent to HUF 236.9 billion in 2025, with the volume unchanged. In the period under review, the 10 largest fertilizer distributors sold 84 percent of the total fertilizer volume directly to farmers.
The nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) active ingredient content of fertilizer purchased by farmers in 2025 was 490 thousand tons, 4.2 thousand tons (+0.9 percent) higher than a year earlier. The nitrogen active ingredient content was 2.5 percent lower, while the phosphorus and potassium active ingredient content increased by 9 and 8.3 percent, respectively, compared to the base period. The ratio of NPK active ingredients in 2025 was 67:17:16, meaning that the nitrogen ratio decreased by 3 percent compared to 2024. In terms of natural weight, 1 million 393 thousand tons of fertilizers were sold directly to farmers in the reporting year, of which 1 million 52 thousand tons were single-component and 341 thousand tons were compound fertilizers. The ratio of single-component and compound fertilizers – in terms of active ingredient weight – was 67:33 in 2024 and 64:36 in 2025. Compared to the average of the past ten years, the total fertilizer sales volume to end users decreased by 15 percent in 2025. The turnover of nitrogen fertilizers was 15 percent, that of phosphorus fertilizers was 4 percent, that of single-component potassium was 24 percent, and that of compound fertilizers was 14 percent below the average for the years 2015–2024. The volume of the current year could not exceed the volume sold in 2024, so it did not even come close to that of previous periods.
