The export of live pigs decreased by 9.5 percent
According to KSH data, Hungary’s live pig exports decreased by 9.5 percent (19.9 thousand tons) in January-August 2023 compared to the January-August 2022 quantity. The import of live pigs increased by 11 percent to 49.2 thousand tons in the observed period.
The quantity of pork sold on the international market decreased by 12.5 percent (94.3 thousand tons), while its value increased by nearly 11 percent during the observed period. The volume of pork imports fell by 12 percent (92 thousand tons), while the value was 26 percent higher.
The price of pork has risen
According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of domestically produced slaughter pigs, excluding VAT and transport costs, was HUF 845/kilogram of carcass hot weight in October 2023, which represented a 1.6 percent increase compared to the average price a year earlier. The processing sales price of cut pork (loin, ribs, thigh) was 1.5 percent higher in the same comparison. According to KSH data, the consumer price of short loin increased by 8 percent and pork leg by 20 percent at the same time.
