Exports of live pigs and pork also decreased

According to data from the European Commission, in January-October 2023, the European Union sold 20 percent less (3.5 million tons) of fresh, frozen and processed pork on the international market than a year earlier.

In the European Union, the slaughterhouse entrance price for pigs belonging to the “E” trade class was 2.1 euros/kilogram of cold carcass weight in December 2023, and did not change significantly over the course of a year. The pig prices of companies and slaughterhouses that are decisive from the point of view of the EU pig market rose by an average of 2 percent in the 3rd week of 2024 compared to the average price of the same week of the previous year.

The export of live pigs and pork from our country has also decreased

According to the KSH data, Hungary’s live pig export decreased by 6 percent (28 thousand tons) in January-October 2023 compared to the amount in January-October 2022. The main partners were Romania, Austria and Slovakia. Imports of live pigs increased by 16 percent to 64,000 tons, Slovakia, Croatia, Germany and the Czech Republic being the largest suppliers. The quantity of pork sold on the international market decreased by almost 10 percent (120,000 tons), while its value increased by 11 percent during the observed period. Most of the pork was shipped to Romania, Croatia and Italy. The volume of pork imports decreased by 13 percent (116,000 tons), and its value was 20 percent higher. Two-thirds of the pork came from Germany, Spain, Poland and Austria. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of domestically produced slaughter pigs, excluding VAT and transport costs, was HUF 861/kilogram of carcass hot weight in December 2023, which represented a 3.5 percent increase compared to the average price a year earlier.
