Netto aims for a leading position in autonomos shopping in Germany
Grocery retailer Netto opened its first German store in Regensburg at the beginning of January, where customers can use the Pick&Go service without registration and check-in. The store is also the largest autonomous shopping outlet in Europe.
The Regensburg-store with a floor area of around 800 square metres, offers 5,000 products.
– With our globally unique Pick&Go concept, we are pioneering autonomous shopping: for the first time, ‘Pick&Go’ is possible in our new store in Regensburg without time-consuming registration and real-time check-in”, said Netto spokeswoman Christina Stylianou.
The grocery retailer is the first discount chain to open a ‘Pick&Go’ store in Munich at the end of 2021, but at that time a smartphone was still required for self-service shopping.
Upon entering the store in Regensburg, smart technology on the ceilings and shelves will match shoppers with the products they have taken, and in real time, will assemble shopping baskets and calculate the amount of the purchase. According to the discount retailer, this is done anonymously, without collecting any personal data.
The technology, developed in collaboration with weighing specialist Mettler Toledo, also allows the selected fruits and vegetables to be weighed automatically and the information to be sent directly to the receipt: the price and weight of the items are directly shown on a digital display on the shelf.
The contents of the basket and the total amount of the purchase are displayed on the two quick terminals at the exit of the store, without a need to place the goods on the till’s conveyor belt or scan it. In addition, the Regensburg store has both traditional and self-service checkouts.
In contrast to previous Pick&Go concepts, the basket amount is displayed on the fast checkout terminal before payment, not afterwards. Customers receive the receipt directly from the in-store terminal, which is a currently worldwide unique service. Payment can be made without any time loss by card, ApplePay, GooglePay or the Netto app. Those who pay with the Netto app automatically get additional benefits, such as the ability to redeem coupons or archive receipts in the app.
