Vegetable prices have risen drastically due to the drought, and dairy products are also expected to rise in price
As a result of the extreme weather, the drought significantly reduced the vegetable harvest, which led to a drastic price increase in the markets. The biggest price increase can be observed in the case of tomatoes and peppers. The price of peppers in wholesale markets increased by a third, while that of tomatoes increased by one and a half times.
According to agricultural economist György Raskó, who spoke to RTL Hírado, traders pass the price increase directly on to consumers, and this is expected to worsen in the autumn months. The data supports this trend: according to the KSH, in August the price of vegetables increased by twice the rate of inflation, by 7%. The price of cluster tomatoes increased by 58%, that of snake cucumbers by 40%, while the price of peppers increased by 37%.
György Raskó emphasized that, in addition to the increase in the price of vegetables, a similar increase in the price of dairy products can be expected if the extreme weather continues. In the autumn months, the increase in the prices of fresh vegetables and fruits can further complicate the situation for consumers, since the actors in the supply chain are not able to compensate for the loss of crops.
