According to data published by DG Agri on February 10, the price of apples for fresh consumption in most Member States is significantly higher than in the same period of the previous year. In the European Commission’s market analysis of the last few months, Belgian and Dutch apple prices were the lowest, but according to the latest report, this dubious honor belongs to Poland again, while Hungary is in the middle field – reports fruitveb.hu.
DG Agri has slightly reduced its previous crop forecast, thereby estimating this year’s harvested quantity below 12 million tons
One of the reasons for this is that in the case of Poland, the largest producer in the EU, very uncertain figures are available on the amount of apples actually harvested – the Poles are primarily struggling with problems in the field of labor, and in addition, a structural transformation would be needed in the variety structure, as it is difficult for them to sell poorly marketable varieties abroad. In recent weeks, there have been many reports from Western Europe about low apple prices, and local organizations have also reported the problem to buyers on several forums, as a result of which prices have started to rise in most member states, including Hungary.
