Farm Europe, the organisation of European farmers and their partners, has issued a joint call to the European Commission on behalf of 125 like-minded EU organisations representing the diversity of European animal production supply chains, calling on the Commission to develop a comprehensive, science-based food strategy. With the initiative “Nutritious Europe: The importance of animal proteins – A call from livestock supply chains to European institutions”, Farm Europe and the professional organisations supporting the call, including the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK), are reaffirming their commitment to a future in which agriculture is both productive and sustainable.
The aim is to provide the European population with a healthy, balanced diet based on scientific evidence and economic reality
Farm Europe is convinced that in the European Union of 27 member states, common thinking and the clash of ideas can generate ambitious, innovative, forward-looking policy alternatives and offer new perspectives to decision-makers. The call for proposals “A Nutritious Europe: The Importance of Animal Proteins” calls on EU policymakers to develop a holistic EU food strategy based on the latest scientific knowledge and research, ensuring fair treatment for all agricultural sectors. Support the development of scientifically sound environmental assessments of food that take into account the entire life cycle, avoiding misleading interpretations that unfairly accuse and negatively portray animal farming and animal product production. Support scientifically sound nutritional impact assessments that confirm the importance of animal-based foods for health. The call also warns of the unintended consequences of policy measures that downgrade the consumption of animal-based foods, noting that a decrease in the production of EU animal-based products would increase import dependence, exacerbate global emissions and endanger the livelihoods of millions of European farmers.
According to the NAK, it is our common responsibility to be active participants in EU processes
The NAK, together with its members and domestic and international professional partner organizations, can support policy decision-making with forward-looking initiatives and proposals based on professional foundations and supported by scientific facts, thereby also asserting the interests of farmers.
