The CEO of ALDI revealed how people shop now
Pénzcentrum conducted an interview with Bernhard Haider, national managing director of ALDI Magyarország Élelmiszer Bt. In addition to the transformation of consumer habits, the labor market situation of the discount chain was discussed; about possible restrictions due to the outgoing operating costs, including the reduction of opening hours.
PC: Gabriella Heiszler, Spar’s CEO, recently stated in her interview with Pénzcentrum that although they have a chance to discuss the government’s ideas with the cabinet, at the same time, there is less of a chance that they will be able to formulate criticisms of certain government policies in such a way that they will be leaked into the actual measures. ALDI Hungary has experience in this direction, is it successful in lobbying for certain measures?
Bernhard Haider: As a full member of various professional organizations, ALDI actively participates in the ongoing work there, and jointly represents the decisions and positions taken within the organizations together with the other member companies. These decisions are typically either in the interests of customers or apply to the entire retail sector, and we stand by these decisions. We do not communicate directly with government decision-makers.
PC: According to the decree on “extra profit taxes”, ALDI also falls into the highest bracket, i.e. it will pay 4.1 percent to the budget for the portion of the tax base exceeding HUF 100 billion. What is the exact amount?
A responsible company must, of course, pay attention to many aspects, including, for example, the impact of the economic situation on the society in which its customers and employees live. As it has already appeared in public sources, we paid HUF 3.4 billion when the special tax was introduced in May 2020, while in 2021 the total annual amount for the higher sales revenue was HUF 5.7 billion, and this year we expect an even higher tax amount.
