Young people must be prepared to preserve food security and the consequences of climate change, which is why agricultural vocational training institutions are implementing irrigation development investments – said Imre Hubai, the State Secretary responsible for agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture in Kenderes, at the project opening event of the Great Plain Agricultural Vocational Training Center, on Wednesday.

At the event, the State Secretary drew attention to the fact that successful crop production in the Kenderes region is unthinkable without irrigation farming, which has a long tradition in the region. Extreme weather poses a serious challenge to agriculture. This is reflected in the fact that the areas of the Kenderes Agricultural Technical School, Vocational School and Dormitory have experienced a yield loss of between 23-39% in terms of all cultivated crops due to drought in the recent period. That is why they pay special attention to water conservation, he added. Imre Hubai highlighted that, thanks to the application submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture, the agricultural vocational training center has won almost 183,000,000 forints for irrigation development, thanks to which water replenishment can be implemented in several areas. Within the framework of the project, two linear irrigation devices will be installed, which will enable a uniform and efficient water supply to the cultivated crops. The total affected area exceeds 104 hectares. The investment includes the irrigation water supply of the orchard of the Kenderes agricultural farm, which is based on the existing drip backbone network and partially constructed drip pipes. In addition, the educational program at the institution can be expanded with the opportunity to acquire irrigation knowledge and skills, the State Secretary emphasized. He explained that the future generation must be prepared not only for the difficulties caused by climate change, but also for the dangers of the free trade agreement between Brussels and Ukraine, and the negative effects of the agreement to be concluded with the Mercosur countries. The government remains committed to protecting the livelihoods and markets of Hungarian farmers and supporting producers in the fight against climate change.
