Meat prices are increasing during the VAT debate
Conflicting news appeared about the possible VAT reduction on meat products. Rogán Antal Chairman of the Economic Committee of the Parliament said at a Friday morning radio show, that the government would like to decrease the burdens on families with children in next year's proposed tax changes, while seeks to collect the consumption -type taxes more efficiently. This fact does not contradict those news. The discourse is about how to decrease VAT on meat products without reaching losses in the sector.
Despite the background debate, the producer price of pigs for slaughter per kilograms was 538 HUF per kilgrammes. On an annual basis, this is a four percent increase.
According to the cut statistics of the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (AKI) the number of pig slaughters has decreased in January-July 2013 by 5 percent, compared to the same period of last year. However, according to the datas of the Central Statistical Office (KSH), Hungary's live pigs exports increased by 29 percent in the January to July period, compared with the same period of the previous year.
