Discount stores rearranging the candy market
The retail sales of candies exceeded HUF 15 billion in the August 2005–July 2006 period, with an increase of 9 per cent over the preceding period. The old favourite, hard and filled candies have lost their leading position which is now held by unfilled candies. Fruity flavours have gained in popularity at the expense of menthol/fresh flavours. Demand for larger packs (over 100 grams) is increasing, while those below 100 grams are losing ground. The average consumer price of candies has shown a decline of 4 per cent in June-July this year, compared to last year. The private labels of discount stores have rearranged the market. The market share of the 401–2500 square meter channel regarding quantities has grown from 31 per cent to 40 per cent in a year.
