Tourism is changing: guests travel more often, but for shorter periods of time
The domestic tourism sector ended a strong summer, according to the data of the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the number of guests increased by 11.3 percent, while the number of guest nights increased by 3.6 percent in a year, Dániel Molnár, the lead economist of the Makronóm Institute, told InfoRádio .
According to the expert, domestic and foreign guests increased proportionally, and in August a balanced development was observed in both areas. While in the earlier months of the year mainly foreign tourists dominated, in August the number of domestic guests also showed a significant increase. Molnár emphasized that although there was a smaller decline in domestic tourism compared to expectations at the beginning of the year, the dynamic growth of foreign guests offset this. Travel habits are also changing: more and more people are choosing shorter but more frequent vacations. The number of guests increased significantly, but the rate of guest nights expanded at a lower rate, which indicates that visitors are staying at the accommodations for a shorter period of time.
According to Molnár, this change is partly due to the changeable weather, as many people prefer to book accommodation for shorter periods, avoiding possible rainy weeks. In addition, it is increasingly common for families to decide on their destination at the last minute and to go on vacation several times, but for shorter periods of time. The data shows that tourism continues to grow steadily, but the gradual transformation of travel habits may bring new challenges and opportunities to the sector.
