The Bicycle-Friendly Settlement and Bicycle-Friendly Workplace Awards were presented
The Bicycle-Friendly Settlement and Bicycle-Friendly Workplace awards were presented on Wednesday in Budapest; the titles were awarded to ten settlements and ten companies and public institutions.
Kornél Kovács, Head of Department of the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM), said that the ÉKM and its legal predecessors have announced the bicycle-friendly settlement and bicycle-friendly workplace tenders for the 17th time, the aim of which is to get as many people in Hungary to cycle as possible.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Transport has for years prioritized increasing traffic awareness and shaping attitudes towards cycling. The latter is served by programs such as the Bike Breakfast and Mobility Week.
He also drew attention to the fact that
Since 2010, Hungary has spent approximately 250 billion forints of domestic and EU funds on the development of the bicycle network, of which more than 2,200 kilometers of bicycle paths have been completed.
He added that with the implementation of the available plans, there could be 6,000 kilometers of independent bicycle paths in the country within the foreseeable future.
The Hungarian Institute for Transport and Infrastructure, responsible for the implementation of the tender, is responsible for the implementation of the tender. According to the Institute of Transport Science and Logistics, the ministry responsible for transport launched the bicycle-friendly settlement and bicycle-friendly workplace application in 2006.
It was announced that 38 applications were received for the 2025 application, of which 17 settlements and 21 workplaces applied for the “Cyclist-friendly” award.
The following municipalities received the title of bicycle-friendly settlement: Kispáli, Lenti, Tamási, Szarvas, Veszprém, Debrecen, Vásárosnamény, as well as Budapest III., X., and XIII. district.
The title of bicycle-friendly workplace was awarded to EDC Debrecen Nonprofit Kft., Arcanum Hotel Békéscsaba, the capital’s XIII. District Public Service Nonprofit Zrt., BKK Budapest Transport Center Zrt., BP 18 United Kindergarten Pestszentimrei Zöld Liget Member School and BP 18 United Kindergarten Pestszentlőrinci Vadvirág Member School, Budapest 10th District Kőbánya Municipality, the Mayor’s Office, the University of Sopron and the University of Pécs.
It was announced at the event that the winners can use the title Bike-Friendly, as well as the logo and sign, in their communication materials for one year.
