Falling prices in the meat sector
The Agricultural Economics Research Institute (AKI) continuously monitors and publishes world trends in poultry and fruit/vegetable products. Their last report reveals that the production price of domestic pork fell by 9 percent to HUF 363/kg in October, compared to the same period in 2008. At present, demand for pork is falling both in the EU and Hungary. Since the Forint is weak, import pork costs 7 percent less than domestic. The volume of slaughter poultry bought by processing companies was up by 9 percent in the first three weeks of November. Domestic poultry meat sales on week 45-47 grew by 3 percent, compared to the same period last year; turkey meat sales contracted by nearly 25 percent.
