One in four adults wants to quit smoking due to price increases
According to the results of a recent research in England, the increase in the price of cigarettes and the awareness of the health risks of smoking are encouraging more and more adults to stop smoking. The study, conducted by University College London, found that price increases are a significant motivation to quit smoking, alongside health risks. The Covid-19 epidemic and economic difficulties further strengthened this trend, the BBC reported.
The survey was based on responses from nearly 6,000 people and found that one in four adults are considering quitting because of price increases. Currently, the average price of a pack of 20 cigarettes is more than 14 pounds (approx. HUF 6,400), and this amount is expected to rise to 16 pounds (approx. HUF 7,300) by 2026, which could be an additional incentive for smokers.
Smoking can lead to serious health problems, including lung cancer and heart and lung disease. About half of lifelong smokers are at risk of early death. Since the Covid-19 epidemic, the number of people trying to quit has increased, which in part has inspired others. According to the latest figures, only 12.7% of England’s adult population smoke, a significant drop from 20% in 2011.
