Ferenc Antal: with the repurchase of Budapest Airport, it has become timely to “channel the airport into the existing railway network”
The project for the airport’s fixed-track railway connection has been “on the table” for several years, and with the repurchase of Budapest Airport, it has become possible to channel Budapest Airport into the existing railway network, said the Deputy State Secretary for Strategic Transactions of the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) on Monday in the Kossuth Radio program Good morning, Hungary!
Antal Ferenc explained that thanks to the approximately 1 billion euro project, it will be possible to get to the airport from Nyugati Railway Station in approximately 20 minutes. “The entire 27-kilometer railway line will definitely be completed by approximately 2034, based on conservative estimates” – stated the Deputy State Secretary, noting at the same time that the development will take place in two phases, so the railway line from Kőbánya-Kispest to the airport will open much sooner, even in 2030-31.
Antal Ferenc also reported that the airport’s passenger traffic was 17.6 million in 2024, and it could reach 20 million this year.
The Deputy State Secretary noted by way of comparison that the business model based on which the purchase price of the airport was determined during the state buyback would be approximately 17.5 He calculated a million passenger traffic, “the airport is doing much better compared to this.”
He also touched on cargo transport, which is also growing much more favorably than preliminary estimates showed. This year, according to their expectations, Budapest Airport’s cargo traffic could reach up to 400 thousand kilotons.
Antal Ferenc said that if Budapest Airport grows so dynamically, then after a while this capacity will no longer be able to handle this cargo transport volume. That is why the establishment of a rural cargo airport was considered.
Buying back Budapest Airport is definitely a good direction, because Budapest Airport is the country’s only and most significant gateway for tourism – said Ferenc Antal.
