What you should know about eggs – storage methods, nutritional value, freshness
Eggs are one of the most important ingredients in the daily diet, which can be used in many ways and has significant nutritional value. However, it is worth knowing what kind of farming they come from, what aspects distinguish individual eggs, and how to determine their freshness – this is revealed in the compilation of Agrárszektor.
Farming methods and differences
The living conditions of laying hens directly affect the method and costs of egg production.
Cage farming: Since 2012, traditional narrow cages have been replaced in the EU by furnished cages, which have been expanded with perches and nesting places. This is the most cost-effective method, and the price of eggs is the lowest here.
Deep-litter system: hens live in a barn, on thick litter, where they can scratch, dust bathe, and have more space to move around than in a cage.
Free range: Birds are allowed to run free during the day, allowing them to live in more natural conditions. Eggs from this type are more expensive.
Organic farming: The strictest conditions are met, with organic feed, low stocking density and a spacious outdoor run. These eggs are the most expensive.
In terms of nutritional value, research shows that there is no significant difference between eggs from different farming systems. The composition of eggs is more influenced by feeding and genetics. The main difference lies in animal welfare and ethical considerations.
Physiological benefits of eggs
Eggs are a complete source of protein, containing all the essential amino acids. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals: vitamins A, D, E, B12, folic acid, iron, zinc and selenium. The choline they contain supports brain function, and lutein and zeaxanthin contribute to eye health. Although it contains cholesterol, dietary cholesterol does not have a significant effect on blood levels in healthy people.
