This year, the autumn harvesting and sowing work was completed, the soil was sufficiently moist for autumn sowing, and in the more or less sunny weather, it was possible to make good progress with the autumn agricultural work as well – announced the State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) responsible for agriculture and rural development according to the ministry’s announcement on Thursday. It was pointed out that the prolonged drought period from mid-summer and the uneven distribution of precipitation at the beginning of autumn had a significant impact on the harvest, as the permanently muddy soil made early work difficult in many cases.

Based on the data of the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK), the sunflower harvest was completed at the earliest, with an average yield of 2.5 tons per hectare, with a yield of 1.7 million tons from nearly 680,000 hectares, which is about 4.9 percent below the average of the last five years. There are significant differences between the harvest results of the individual counties in terms of yields per hectare, from 1.8 tons/hectare to 2.9 tons/hectare.

This year’s drought also caused crop losses in corn

Yields per hectare also decreased accordingly compared to previous years. A total of more than 5 million tons were harvested nationally from 865,000 hectares with an average yield of 5.8 tons per hectare. This culture was mostly affected by the drought, this year’s average yield is significantly lower than the average yield of the past years. Regarding the county results, there are significant differences, similar to sunflower, while the average yield of the Western Transdanubian counties was close to 7.7 tons per hectare, while in the Southern Great Plain this value was between 3.3 and 4.5 tons, the announcement said.

It was explained in detail that the summer drought also affected soy among the field crops harvested in the fall

Accordingly, the national average yield is also below the yields of the past five years. A total of nearly 250,000 tons of soybeans were harvested nationally from the crop area exceeding 111,000 hectares with an average yield of 2.2 tons/hectare. However, due to the increase in the harvested area, this year’s soybean harvest will exceed last year’s by 50 percent, and the yield of the past five years by about 60 percent. The popularity of soy is explained by the fact that it is an important protein plant, which is also of great importance as a food, feed and industrial raw material, and as a nitrogen-fixing plant, it is an important part of the crop rotation. Sugar beet produced an average yield of 54 tons/hectare, a total of 454,000 tons of this crop could be harvested nationally, which exceeds last year’s amount. Potatoes also suffered from the lack of precipitation and summer heat waves, 173 thousand tons of crops were also harvested from 6.3 thousand hectares nationally, which result is also better than last year’s value, they added.

They touched on the fact that the autumn sowing of cereals and the tasks related to it basically determine the next year’s harvest, therefore this autumn work is also of great importance

During this period, farmers should pay attention to preparing the soil, choosing the right seeds, and determining the ideal time for sowing. Regarding these works, it can be said that 132,000 hectares of rapeseed, 286,000 hectares of barley and 914,000 hectares of winter wheat were sown. While the size of the actual sown area for rapeseed and barley is below last year’s, it shows an increase in the case of wheat. In the case of rye, 37,000 hectares were sown, which corresponds to last year’s value, while in the case of triticale, the actual sown area of 63,000 hectares falls short of the 2023 figure.

In summary, it can be stated that this year, despite the weather extremes, the autumn work on the fields went well. In the case of some crops, the yield is slightly below the average, but in the case of soy, it is significantly higher.
