AM: Farmers undertaking sustainable agricultural practices will receive another significant support
The transfer of around 58.5 billion forints of support has begun, as in addition to basic subsidies, redistributive subsidies, and additional income support for young farmers, payments for agri-environmental management (AKG) and organic farming support programs (ÖKO) will be made, which will reach the affected farmers based on almost 37 thousand applications – announced István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) on Tuesday.

According to the minister, the purpose of the payments is to guarantee the solvency of producers, with particular attention to smaller farms, and to help those farmers who undertake to preserve natural resources, strengthen soil and water protection, maintain biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change in their everyday farming – they wrote. AKG encourages farmers to carry out their productive work by introducing sustainable land use practices, reducing chemical use, and preserving soil fertility in the long term. The possibility of organic farming provides assistance to those farmers who produce with certified organic certification, without chemicals, using natural methods, contributing to healthy, safe and sustainable food production – explained István Nagy. He highlighted that participation in these programs is supported on a larger area than ever before, as the ministry previously made a positive support decision for more than 1.5 million hectares in the case of AKG, and about 330 thousand hectares in the case of ÖKO. The popularity of these programs indicates that the green transition of Hungarian agriculture is ongoing, and the conscious approach of farmers is becoming more and more determined, since thanks to the favorable support conditions, sustainable production is predictable in both environmental and economic terms – the announcement states.
Environmentally friendly farming practices contribute to strengthening rural areas, increasing food self-sufficiency and preserving natural values in the long term
In this light, the European Commission’s proposal, which would combine all EU funds into a single plan with common implementation rules, is particularly harmful. Hungary has consistently stood in favor of an independent, two-pillar agricultural support system, as the planned support system would even jeopardize the results achieved by farmers in terms of sustainable farming, in addition to food security – the Minister emphasized, according to the AM statement.
