Aldi at the lead of Alber Schweitzer Foundation’s animal welfare ranking
The Albert Schweitzer Foundation has published an animal welfare ranking for food retailers. Aldi Süd, Aldi Nord and Tegut come out on top.
Bringing up the rear are Edeka, Netto and Bela. Tegut and Globus have seen the most significant changes in the rankings. In 2020, Tegut left all competitors behind with 52 per cent of the maximum points, whereby Globus climbed from the bottom to the fifth place.
For the ranking, the foundation put the animal welfare and purchasing guidelines of eleven supermarkets and discounters to the test. They focused on the husbandry requirements for various animal species, the phasing out of husbandry levels 1 and 2 and animal welfare progress for broiler chickens.
Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord took the lead in this year’s ranking. Both achieved a good third of the possible points with 36 percent each. The companies improved their score by just under ten percent. Tegut is the biggest loser in the ranking with 35 percent. Kaufland slightly improved its overall result with 32 percent. Globus made a big leap with 31 percent. The Rewe Group also came in at 31%.
Norma has made up one place since 2020, almost doubling its overall score to 29%. Lidl has slipped down several places with 23%. Edeka achieved 22%, Netto Marken-Discount 15% and Bela 13%.
