Job rush at British Tesco
More than 1800 potential recruits lodged an application, with just 58 getting a job – that's 31 people chasing every post – at the Tesco Metro, which is to open next month.
The stampede for work saw store chiefs draw up a short list of 300 names for interview. Even then, four-fifths of those who got an interview were rejected.
Carole McCallion, who has been with Tesco for 10 years and will head up the new store, said: “We have been absolutely overwhelmed with the response.
“We have recruited brilliant people who are about to begin a long successful career.”
Among the recruits were a number of students, tradesmen, retail managers and an ex-Army officer. There were also several business owners who had decided the time was right to work for some one else.
The new Tesco Metro is a former Co-op store in East Kilbride's St Leonards Road. Thousands of pounds are thought to have been spent upgrading the building. (penzcentrum.hu)
