Tensions are rising in the Canary Islands between locals and tourists, with protests this week against excessive tourism.
With over 14 million tourists visiting the islands last year, where only 2.2 million people live, locals are demanding quality tourism. They want cleaner beaches and controls on illegal accommodations, urging the government to impose a tourist tax to improve living conditions and job opportunities that are currently tied to the tourism-dominated economy.
