Hungarian higher education operates in accordance with the so called Bologna system, which is a two stage system, divided into bachelor and MSc courses. We believe that our accession to the EU has resulted in an increased need for well trained technical-agricultural engineers. The structure of our Faculty has been altered following our accession to the European education system. We are now providing a range of courses at both levels. In my opinion, a lot more engineers are needed than we have at present. We must be aware of the fact that food is a strategic product, which has far more significance than the proportion of the GDP it accounts for. Development of functional foods is an important area of research world-wide, while financing for higher education is not adequate. Co-operation can be one of the keys to the solution. Our faculty is ready to co-operate. The main task of our Innovation and Technology Transfer Office is to discover areas for co-operation. My answer in short is that co-operation, continuous development of educational programs and an engineering approach can serve to adapt the research and educational programs of institutions of higher education to the nutritional and consumer requirements of the 21st century.
