A healthy diet plays a major role in preventing diseases, especially cardiovascular ones and diabetes. In order to follow a healthy diet, it is essential to have an easily accessible assortment of healthy food. Food products with lower fat, salt and sugar content than their competitors should always be preferred. Unfortunately, the range of high calorie products with a low nutritional value is very wide in Hungary. For example, the average salt consumption of the population is more than three times higher than the recommended level. There are positive developments as well, like the introduction of RDA labelling and functional foods. In the EU, one out of three member companies in CIAA have reformulated at least half of their products on a voluntary basis. (I wonder why these products are not sold in Hungary?) The EU Commission has established a workgroup to facilitate the reduction of salt levels in food. Finland is a positive example, where it is compulsory to label high salt content. Assortments determine how healthy our diet is, which means the food industry has a decisive role to play in making our nutritional habits healthier.
