Damaged packages at Christmas can cause up to 18.1 billion euros in damage to companies
In the period from Black Friday to Christmas, online orders swell several times, which is why this period is of particular importance in e-commerce.
The busiest months of the year present serious challenges to the entire supply chain: due to the sudden jump in the number of packages, and at the same time the parallel decrease in transport capacity, the effects on packages become stronger and they become more vulnerable. Based on a survey of 8,000 people by DS Smith, damages resulting from the return of damaged products can rise to approximately 18.1 billion euros across Europe. The forward-thinking packaging technology company is therefore constantly testing solutions that can be used to protect against extreme forces of up to 50G.
As a result of changed shopping habits during the pandemic, the role of online stores has become stronger, and their share of the market has been increasing ever since. According to a survey conducted by DS Smith, products purchased online will account for 21% of total sales globally in 2022, and this value may rise to 24.5% by 2025. In addition, e-commerce runs at maximum capacity from November to the end of the year. Customer demands place serious expectations on e-shops, which also places extreme burdens on the supply chain. Due to the significantly increased number of orders and the shortened delivery time due to gift giving, the effects on packages are multiplied.
