Lack of Guidance, Not Interest, Holds Back SMEs from AI Adoption
Team.blue, one of Europe’s leading digital service providers, has released a new report highlighting how small businesses across the continent approach digitalization and artificial intelligence. Based on a survey of more than 8,000 SMEs in 30 countries, the findings reveal that the main barrier to progress is not a lack of interest, but uncertainty and insufficient guidance.
According to the study, 30 per cent of companies do not know which digital tools to choose, while 26 per cent lack confidence in using them. Among businesses operating for more than ten years, over 60 per cent currently have no plans to adopt AI. Claudio Corbetta, CEO of team.blue, emphasized that technology is evolving faster than many small businesses can follow, making simplification and practical support essential.
The survey shows that SMEs’ average technological confidence is only 6 out of 10, with sole proprietors finding decision-making particularly difficult. While nearly one in five businesses already use AI actively and another 36 per cent are experimenting, skepticism remains high. Concerns focus on data security, accuracy, and preserving brand voice. Still, 54 per cent believe AI will boost competitiveness, though 22 per cent remain unsure how to begin.
The report stresses that SMEs need practical guidance rather than more tools: 42 per cent want clear recommendations, 38 per cent request training or workshops, and 50 per cent seek step-by-step support. Jonas Dhaenens, founder of team.blue, noted that digital tools only matter if they truly support the people using them.
Hungary reflects the broader European trends. Local entrepreneurs are enthusiastic but often uncertain. Luke Paltridge, Commercial Director at Webnode by team.blue, explained that Hungarian SMEs are eager to embrace AI and digital solutions, but require intuitive products and accessible guidance to move from experimentation to measurable results.
