Where wheat turns into flour and data: this is how the domestic milling industry is digitizing
Grain processing has quietly become a significantly digitalized industry in Hungary, but the process only works if the network can keep up. When we examine the path of nearly a thousand tons of raw materials processed daily from the grain storage to the flour that is packaged, it is no longer enough to follow delivery notes. In a modern mill, every single point in the process produces data: from the moisture sensor to the grain fineness meter to the thermal cameras. The collection, transmission and interpretation of data was the privilege of large-scale industry a few years ago. Today, the proper operation of a modern mill depends almost as much on a stable internet connection as on good quality wheat.
The change did not happen overnight, and it is now irreversible. Hungary’s leading milling company, GoodMills, processes around 320 thousand tons of raw materials annually. The control center of a modern mill and its sites almost resembles a software company more than an industrial hall – with the difference that the consequence of a system failure here is not a frozen computer, but even a ton or more tons of flour that has become waste from a stopped production line. Therefore, the reliability of digitalized systems and the continuity of the connection are of critical importance in the operation of the mill.
The network has become the new infrastructure
In the case of industries with a long history like the mill, one of the most critical – although less spectacular – elements of digitalization is the data network. Mills typically operate in unfrequented city centers. The thick concrete walls of the buildings, the steel structures and the geographical location together reduce the efficiency of any solution that is based on traditional Wi-Fi connections. That is why industrial players are turning to so-called SD-WAN-based solutions, which manage multiple network connections at the same time and automatically switch to the more stable solution in the event of a failure – without the production process even noticing.
However, for the solution to spread, the mobile network itself must be fast and reliable enough – especially where the plants are located. According to data collected by the measuring vehicles of the NMHH (National Media and Communications Authority) and publicly available on the szelessav.net website, Yettel currently has the fastest average mobile network download speed in Hungary, which serves the connection of GoodMills to its nationwide coverage sites in Baja, Komárom, Tiszapalkonya and the central office in Budaörs.
Data as the new raw material of the milling industry
The economic logic of digitalization is the same in industry as elsewhere: whoever sees the data generated during production sooner can analyze, act sooner, and make decisions for more efficient business.
In the case of a mill, for example, if the quality control system indicates in real time that the moisture content of a given shipment exceeds the specified value, the intervention must also take place in real time, and the same logic applies to predictive maintenance: the sensors of the machines send information; if the system detects an anomaly, the operator can react before the failure stops production. This requires that the data not only be generated, but also reach the right place – quickly, safely, without interruption.
The basis of flour is still grain, but the network on which the entire system relies guarantees that the process remains efficient, safe, and competitive.
