Agrometeorology: several waves of soaking rain are coming

It was reported that the amount of precipitation in the past 10 days remained below 5 millimeters almost nationwide. The 90-day precipitation total is significantly below the average in almost the entire country, by about 40-130 millimeters. The upper 30-60 centimeter layer of the soil in the western half of Transdanubia and in the northern part of the country still contains moisture, but in the Great Plain it is almost bone dry, and the soil deeper than 50-60 centimeters is very dry almost nationwide. The temperature in the middle of last week was roughly in line with the multi-year average, with peak values ​​mostly rising to around 15-20 degrees Celsius, then by Sunday morning there was almost nationwide frost due to a cold front, and during the day the maximums were only around 14 degrees. On Monday, frost was still present in the eastern two-thirds of the country and on Tuesday in the northeast, with minus 6 and minus 8 degrees also occurring in the northern valleys and in the dry sandy soil of Upper Kiskunság. Milder and wetter air waves arrived from Tuesday, the night frosts ceased, and on Wednesday the air warmed up to between 15 and 23 degrees.

However, for the development of rapeseed and barley, and for the germination of winter wheat – which is currently in dusty soil in most places – soaking rain would be urgently needed practically throughout the country. According to the forecast, highly variable, rainy weather is expected in the future, with the first wave passing over the country on Thursday evening and Friday, the second on Sunday, but minor rain is also possible in the first half of next week. By the middle of next week, rain exceeding 10-20 millimeters may fall in a large area, so the upper layer of the soil is likely to be soaked. During the long weekend, peak values ​​of 12-18 degrees can be expected, then the warming rate will decrease by 3-4 degrees on Monday, but after that another slow warming will follow. The strongest winds are expected on Friday: a westerly wind movement that intensifies into storms is expected in a large area, except for the southwestern part of the country.
