Agrometeorology: the persistent cold would be necessary
The cold would be needed for a longer period in order for pathogens and pests to be significantly decimated – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.
They wrote: it rained in many places at the end of last week, snow also fell in Transdanubia and the southern part of the country, then dry air arrived from Monday. The amount of precipitation in the last thirty days, especially in Transdanubia, is well above the many years’ amount. The upper one-meter layer of the soil is still saturated or close to saturation, and water also reaches the even deeper layers, which means a favorable outlook for the next year. The size of the areas inundated with inland water has not changed significantly, there are still patches of inland water mainly in the Alföld and the Little Plain, in some places it has been for more than a month. They added: in the middle of last week, the temperature was well above the long-term average and maximums of 10-15 degrees Celsius were typical, but from Sunday, an arctic air wave arrived with strong, sometimes stormy winds, so in the first half of the second week of January, the maximums are the wind and despite the sunshine, they were only around 0 degrees. The coldest nights of the winter so far took place on Wednesday and Thursday morning, typically with values around minus 10 degrees, and currently the upper 3-10 centimeter layer of the soil is frozen. They reminded him that in the part of the winter that has passed so far, significant ground frost has not yet formed, only in the last one or two days.
The analysis drew attention to the fact that autumn crops do not like permanent water coverage
They can survive below 4-5 degrees Celsius, but above that only for a maximum of three weeks, but the cold weather is only from this week, before that the temperature exceeded the tolerance limit. The stronger frosts that have formed at night in the past few days would be needed more permanently in order to decimate the number of pests and pathogens, because this has not happened in the part of the winter that has passed so far – they wrote. It was noted that the autumn crops where there was no permanent inland water are in relatively good condition, only the permanent cold and snow are missing. According to the forecast, the cold weather will remain until Wednesday of next week, with weaker frosts at night than before, and values close to or slightly above 0 degrees during the day. Considerable precipitation is unlikely in partly sunny, partly cloudy weather, so the soil will be slippery, which will be helped by the often rising wind.
