Agrometeorology: the soil is drying out
During the sunny, dry weather, which is several degrees warmer than usual at this time, the part of the soil close to the surface has dried out a lot, and the water loss in the middle soil layer is also becoming more significant, with regard to autumn sowings, a drought is already developing in the central part of the country – wrote HungaroMet Zrt. in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

According to the analysis, almost no precipitation has fallen in the country in the past week, the last time precipitation affecting a larger area fell more than two weeks ago, then partly in the form of snow and ice. In the ninety-day precipitation total, an excess can only be detected in a few spots in the southern part of the country, with 20-50 millimeters less precipitation than usual in large areas at this time. The part of the soil close to the surface has dried out a lot over the past two weeks, and the moisture loss in the layer between 20-50 centimeters is also becoming increasingly significant. In most parts of the Great Plain and the Mezőföld, the soil did not fill with moisture during the winter, and the upper one-meter layer is still 40-80 millimeters short of saturation. The average temperature was 3-5 degrees Celsius higher than the long-term average, with a very large daily temperature fluctuation of almost 20 degrees. Ground frosts were regular in large areas at night, and the maximum temperature was between 15 and 20 degrees.
Rapeseed and winter cereals have started to develop in most places
The sap circulation of fruit trees and grapes has started, the buds of early stone fruits have burst, but the rapid development has been held back by night frosts so far. According to the forecast, the weather will become more variable, scattered showers and thunderstorms may occur every day, but there is no prospect of significant precipitation affecting a larger area, the soil will continue to dry out. Ground frost is still expected in many places. Due to a cold front at the beginning of next week, the air will only warm up to 10-15 degrees during the day.
