For weeks, the drought has been intensifying in most of Hungary, corn and sunflower stocks are in forced ripening in more and more places and have begun to dry out, but no significant rain is expected for the time being, HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They wrote that the weather has been dry for most of the past week, the incoming weak weather fronts only brought significant precipitation to a small area, in the southwest, west and northeast, 20-30 millimeters in some places, but a significant part of the country remained almost completely dry. The amount of precipitation in the last 30 days is significantly below the average throughout the country, the deficit is mostly 20-70 millimeters. The upper half-meter layer of the soil is extremely dry in most of the country. The peak temperature on the first day of August was still above 35 degrees Celsius in many places, and then behind a cold front the maximums decreased to close to 30 degrees.

Vegetation is more than two weeks ahead of normal in its development, to which even the drought due to forced ripening adds to the field crops

The sunflowers have bloomed and the corn is drying in more and more places, the ripening process has begun. Although rain is desperately needed, in many places even a heavy rainfall would not help the herds. Unfortunately, they did not receive even the average amount of precipitation during the flowering and grain formation phase, due to the persistent drought and heat, very poor yield averages are expected in the stands without irrigation, they wrote.

According to the forecast, it will continue to be mostly dry, with the prospect of warmer weather again

On a regional average, no significant amount of rain is expected in the next 6-8 days, so overall, the soil will continue to dry in most parts of the country, and the drought is expected to worsen. The peak temperature will initially be around 30 degrees, then from Saturday it will rise to close to 35 degrees in the southern areas, and above that next week.
