Agrometeorology: the soil needs precipitation, but dry weather is ideal for flowering fruit trees
The very dry surface soil layer across the country needs precipitation a lot, but dry weather is ideal for flowering fruit trees – wrote HungaroMet Zrt. in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

According to the analysis, the amount of precipitation in the past 30 days in most parts of the country was between 1-4 millimeters, but in some places nothing fell, and in the spots affected by showers, 5-10 millimeters were measured. Precipitation fell by 25-35 millimeters less than the long-term average in the past 30 days, and the 90-day precipitation total also indicates a significant deficit of 25-45 millimeters almost nationwide. Transdanubia and the southern part of the country will receive abundant rainfall on Thursday and in the following days, but little rain is likely in the northeastern third of the country. The surface part of the soil has continued to dry out over the past week, but there is a sufficient amount of moisture in the layers deeper than 20 centimeters. However, in most parts of the Great Plain and the Mezőföld, the upper one-meter layer was not filled with moisture during the winter either, there being 60-90 millimeters missing for saturation. During the day, the air warmed up to 12-14 degrees Celsius in the second half of last week, and from Sunday to 15-18 degrees. Light frosts were typical on less cloudy nights and in areas. The soil temperature measured at 5 centimeters in the Great Plain has already permanently exceeded 10 degrees.
Rapeseed and winter cereals started to develop at the end of February, their green mass is constantly increasing, but for their ideal development they need abundant rainfall
Early stone fruits are blooming all over the country, and the buds of other fruit trees have also burst. Apricots and peaches are damaged by frosts stronger than minus 2 or minus 3 degrees Celsius during the flowering development phase, and frosts of this magnitude have typically occurred in the frosty corners in the past week. According to the forecast, precipitation between 15 and 50 millimeters is likely on Thursday and Friday, with a higher amount in the western and southwestern regions. Snow and sleet are also expected in Transdanubia, while thunderstorms may also develop in the south, and the tendency for precipitation will decrease from Saturday. In the week ahead, the northerly wind is often accompanied by strong or stormy gusts. Severe frosts are unlikely at night, temperatures may drop slightly below freezing in the frosty areas. During the day, the air will typically warm up to between 12-17 degrees, with cooler temperatures in the west and warmer weather in the Great Plain.
