We should prepare for dry and summer-like warm weather until the middle of next week, which will help ripening and harvesting – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

According to the analysis, 20-50 millimeters of rain fell in the past ten days, but only 5-15 millimeters fell in the southern part of the country, while 60-70 millimeters occurred in smaller spots. In the second half of last week, more rain fell in many places in Trans-Tisza and the central part of the country than in the previous thirty days combined, so in the northern part of the country the thirty-day precipitation total is around average, and in many places significantly exceeds it, while in many places in the southern part of the country the deficit is still between 10-50 millimeters. In the past 90 days, the central and southern parts of the country have received 80-120 millimeters less precipitation than usual at this time of year. The peak temperature last Friday and Saturday was typically between 25-30 degrees Celsius, then dropped to around 20 degrees by Sunday, but warming began again from Monday. In the cool air mass that arrived behind Tuesday’s cold front, it was only 21-23 degrees on Wednesday, and by Thursday morning the air had cooled to 10, in some places below 5 degrees in large areas.

Sunflowers are still being harvested, and in areas more severely affected by the drought, so is the corn harvest

The precipitation of the past two weeks is no longer useful, hindering the harvest and worsening the quality of the sunflower. However, the rain was very useful for the germination and emergence of freshly sown rapeseed, as well as for the soil preparation of the fields that are still to be sown. According to the forecast, the next few days will be hot and mostly dry, so the soil near the surface will dry out a lot. The weather may turn rainy again in the second half of next week. The temperature is rising: from Saturday, maximums are expected to be close to 30 degrees, and from Sunday, slightly above in some places.
