Agrometeorology: the new year starts with cold weather, there is a chance of significant precipitation in the south

Next year will start with cold, mainly rainy weather in the southern half of the country – wrote HungaroMet Zrt. in its Wednesday agrometeorological analysis. They wrote that from last Tuesday to Thursday, precipitation between 5-20 millimeters fell in several places in the western and southwestern third of the country, part of which fell in the form of snow. However, in the northeastern third of the country, nothing or only less than 1 millimeter of precipitation was measured.

The December precipitation amount was below the multi-year average throughout the country. In a significant part of the Great Plain, only the near-surface layer of the soil contains a significant amount of moisture, while the moisture content of the middle and deeper soil layers still does not reach 50 percent in proportion to the amount of water usable by plants. In Transdanubia and the Northern Central Mountains, the upper half meter also contains plenty of moisture, but the layer deeper than half a meter was only replenished in a small area on the northern and southwestern border edges.

The daily average temperature was 1-2 degrees Celsius below freezing in the southwest and the eastern and northeastern thirds, while elsewhere it was the same amount above in recent days. At night, the air cooled down throughout the country to below freezing, in some places to between minus 5 and minus 10 degrees, but during the day, values above freezing were measured, in many places above 5 degrees. The upper 5-10 centimeter layer of the soil was already frozen in some places.

However, in the Great Plain, the deeper soil layers are still dry, and heavy precipitation, primarily snow, is needed here. According to the forecast, next year will start with cold, rainy weather, especially in the southern part of the country, with 5-15 millimeters of precipitation expected in the southern part of the country until Sunday, and less than that can be expected elsewhere. At first, sleet and then snowfall are expected, and snowfall is expected mainly in the southern and eastern parts of the country in the first half of next week. The weather will remain windy. The nights will be frost-free mainly in the Great Plain on Friday and Saturday, and the air will warm up to 1-6 degrees during the day, but on the other nights, the temperature will drop below freezing throughout the country, especially in the north, to minus 5 degrees, and from Sunday onwards, only values around or slightly below freezing are expected during the day.
