The lands lack snow and rain, because the Great Plain still has a huge water shortage in the soil, but it also lacks the cold for pests and pathogens to thrive – wrote HungaroMet Zrt in its agrometeorological analysis on Wednesday.

According to the information, the weather in the past week has been mild and uneventful, with gloomy, humid, foggy weather being typical, and no significant rain has fallen. The part of the soil near the surface is close to saturation, and in a significant part of the country the water supply of the middle soil layer is also satisfactory, but in the Great Plain the ground is still dry below the 20-30 centimeter level. Significant moisture has only reached the soil layer deeper than half a meter in the northern and western parts of the country, and in the Great Plain the water shortage in the upper 1 meter layer still exceeds 100 millimeters. The temperature in the southwest was around average, while in the east and northeast it was 3-4 degrees Celsius higher. In the middle of last week, maximums of around 10 degrees Celsius still occurred in sunnier places, then with the formation of a foggy cold pad, the daily temperature fluctuation decreased, with the values mostly between 0 and 5 degrees in the country.

Rapeseed and winter cereals sprouted nicely in the west and north, quickly becoming strong and in good condition

The moisture content of the soil layer near the surface and the mild weather typical of the first half of November favored their development. In the last decade of November, the stands in the Great Plain also received more thorough irrigation, which had difficulty sprouting and developing in the dry conditions typical of this region until mid-November. Currently, the crops are finding sufficient moisture in the soil, but in the Great Plain the deeper soil layers are still dry, and further heavy precipitation, primarily snow, is needed here, but there is no prospect of this for now. According to the forecast, gloomy, mild weather will continue for the next 6-8 days, without major precipitation, although light rain, drizzle, and in some places temporary even sleet are expected in several places and several times. The temperature will be between minus 1 and plus 5 degrees at night, between 1 and 6 degrees during the day, but in temporarily sunnier parts, maximums of around 10 degrees may occur. A bigger change may come during and after the holiday.
