Without greater cold, and with sufficient moisture in the soil, the weaker autumn cereal crops may strengthen in the Great Plain, with a forecast of more significant rain in Transdanubia in the coming days, with smaller amounts likely in the east – wrote HungaroMet Zrt. in its agrometeorological analysis.

In the analysis published on its website on Wednesday, it was written that significant precipitation, 5-15 millimeters, fell only in the southeastern part of the country in the past week. A significant amount of rain and snow fell in the last decade of November, so the monthly precipitation in most parts of the country exceeds the usual amount for this time of year. In the northern part of the country, 20-60 millimeters more rain fell in a large area than usual for this time of year, while there is a 5-15 millimeters deficit in the eastern, northeastern border areas and in the southern parts of the Great Plain. The amount of precipitation that fell in autumn also shows considerable regional variability: in the northern, western and southwestern parts of the country, 150-220 millimeters fell in many places, while in the southern part of the Great Plain it was only 65-85 millimeters, which is only half of the long-term average, but in other places outside the Northern Central Mountains, 10-40 millimeters less than the usual autumn amount was measured. The autumn-winter recharge of the soils started late this year, but the upper 20-30 centimeter layer is close to saturation throughout the country, the middle layer in the Great Plain has already received less moisture, and the soil layer deeper than half a meter has only received a larger amount of moisture in the north and southwest, and is still very dry in a significant part of the country. A lot of precipitation is still needed in winter so that a period of lack of precipitation in spring or summer does not cause serious problems. The temperature in the east and northeast was 1-2 degrees Celsius above the long-term average, while in the west and northwest it was the same, with the air warming up mostly between 2 and 7 degrees during the day. Last week, on Thursday and Friday, the air was still below freezing in large areas at dawn.

Rapeseed and winter cereals in the west and north have been in strong, good condition in recent weeks

The moisture content of the soil layer near the surface and the mild weather typical of the first half of November favored their development. In the last decade of November, the stands in the Great Plain also received more thorough irrigation, which had difficulty emerging and developing in the dry conditions typical of this area until mid-November. The heavy rainfall helped a lot with the lack of water, and the cereals were able to strengthen slightly in the mild weather that has been typical since then. According to the forecast, the weather in the coming days will be mild, humid air waves, with mostly cloudy skies, with only occasional light rain. Rain is expected mainly in Transdanubia on Thursday and Friday, with 5-15 millimeters possible, while less is likely in the east. Nights will typically be frost-free, and daytime temperatures will increase.
