In the past week, heavy rainfall has irrigated a significant part of the country, thus beginning the autumn-winter recharge of soils. Although there were significant regional differences in the amount of precipitation, even in the Great Plain regions that received less rain, some moisture reached the soil layer deeper than half a meter – wrote HungaroMet Zrt. in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They wrote that the weather turned rainy in the past week, it snowed in several places, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, heavy rain fell in the western and northern third of the country. Thus, in the past ten days, the precipitation total exceeded 20 millimeters almost everywhere, in the southwest and in the northern part of the country 50-100 millimeters fell in many places, and thus the 30-day total already exceeds the multi-year average in a significant part of the country, only in the eastern and southeastern regions of the Great Plain it fell 10-15 millimeters less than usual at this time. The upper 20-centimeter layer of the soil was saturated or close to saturation everywhere, but the middle layer received less in the Great Plain, and the layer deeper than half a meter received significant moisture only in the southwest and in the Northern Central Mountains. The temperature has dropped significantly in the past week compared to the previous period, with maximum values below 10 degrees Celsius in the second half of last week and below 5 degrees Celsius over the weekend, but on Sunday the air did not warm up above freezing point in some places during the day, and then, as a result of the easing, values above 10 degrees were measured in the Great Plain on Tuesday and Wednesday. The coldest was on Monday morning, when it was even colder than minus 5 degrees in the snow-covered regions.

Rapeseed and winter cereals have been in strong, good condition in the west and north in recent weeks.

The moisture content of the soil layer near the surface and the mild weather typical of the first half of November favored their development. In the past week, the stands in the Great Plain also received more thorough irrigation, which had difficulty emerging and developing in the dry conditions typical of this area until mid-November. The heavy rainfall helped a lot with the water shortage, but with it came the colder weather, which slowed down the development of the crops a bit. According to the forecast, dry, slightly milder than usual, quiet late autumn weather is expected, with increasing fog from the beginning of next week. The temperature in the less cloudy northern and western regions may drop below freezing at night, even to minus 5 degrees, while in the cloudier Great Plain areas it will be above freezing, but 3-8 degrees is likely during the day.
