Precipitation is most needed in the southern regions of the central part of the country for soil preparation prior to sowing autumn grains, while the upper soil layer contains enough moisture in most parts of the country – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They wrote: in the past ten days, a total of 10-25 millimeters of precipitation have been measured in many places in Transdanubia and the northern half of the eastern part of the country, which is less than the usual amount at this time in most places, but it was enough to keep the soil near the surface moist. However, in many places in the southern part of the Great Plain, only 1-3 millimeters fell, and the upper soil layer there is still dry. The temperature was 2-4 degrees Celsius lower than the long-term average, and the degree of daytime warming has decreased day by day since Sunday. Ground frosts occurred in several places at dawn, but in the frost-prone areas of the north and among the sand dunes of Kiskunság, it was even two meters high on Thursday morning.

Sunflower and corn harvest continues

Yields are fundamentally determined by the summer drought, the green mass of most of the stands was much less than usual for the season, and the plants began to dry out quickly, and the September rainfall worsened the quality of the crop. The rain was very useful for the germination and initial development of rapeseed, as well as for preparing the soil for sowing autumn grains, and even more would be needed in the southern part of the country – they wrote. They added: after the cold, often windy, showery weather of the past few days, it would be good if the good weather returned for October agricultural work, but the temperature has not yet risen significantly this week. Although the precipitation tendency is temporarily decreasing, rain will fall again in many places from Saturday evening, with precipitation typically between 2-5 millimeters likely until Sunday afternoon. Nighttime ground frosts will disappear from Sunday, and daytime temperatures will rise to between 15-20 degrees at the beginning of next week.
