Agrometeorology: There is a drought in an increasingly large area
Especially in the central areas of Hungary, the drought is intensifying, the summer plants urgently need rain – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday. They wrote: there is little chance of rain until the end of next week, only scattered showers are possible.
The heat will continue to increase, and it may moderate in the second half of next week. Last week, more than 10 millimeters of rain fell only in patches, and most of the country remained completely dry. The 30-day precipitation amount shows an excess compared to the average in a smaller and smaller area, rather only in the northeast, the deficit is 20-60 millimeters in the greater part of the country. The top 50 cm soil layer is getting drier all over the country, between the Danube and Tisza, on the eastern edge of Transdanubia, and on the western side of the Maros-Körös, it is already critically dry. The most serious drought situation is currently between the Danube and Tisza and in the Szentes-Orosháza-Hódmezővásárhely area – they pointed out.
The peak temperature has been rising since the middle of the last week, the third heat wave of the year has finally arrived this week, which promises to be quite durable
Vegetation, including the planted plants, are two to three weeks ahead of normal in their development. Harvesting of the autumn crops is still taking place, the weather is favorable for this. Sunflowers and corn are blooming, they need the most moisture now, but the soil is drying out more and more. The biggest problem is between the Danube-Tisza and Maros-Körös. However, in about a third of the country, the soil still contains enough moisture for optimal development. The duration of leaf wetness exceeded five hours a day only in small spots, the development of fungal diseases was not supported by this dry, warm weather, the analysis states.
